A property owner with frontage on a protected coastal cove wanted to add a small dock for recreational boating purposes. After attempting the permitting process and meeting significant challenges, the owner needed professional help and found Shore Design through their network. Working as a team, the owner and Shore Design developed a design that met project goals and satisfied strict regulatory requirements. Once coastal permits were issued, the owner shared the final design with several marine contractors and hired one to build the dock. Construction was completed in early 2024.
An old stone block seawall (aka bulkhead) on a tidal river in eastern CT reached its useful life and started to fail. It was important to the property owner (a non-profit organization) that the repair solution be resilient and durable, but also maintain the historical stone character. Knowing that construction would be challenging in a highly regulated waterway, the owner first selected an experienced waterfront contractor and then hired Shore Design for professional design/permitting services (structural engineering by Sound Engineering Associates). Working as a team, the owner, contractor, and Shore Design developed a design that met the project goals and satisfied regulatory requirements. After obtaining approvals from all three levels of government, the owner coordinated with the contractor to begin work. Construction is underway in 2024.
The owner of an existing fixed dock (previously constructed with a DEEP dock permit and Army Corps dock permit) at an exposed location in eastern CT needed a safe and convenient means to store a boat. After consulting with a marine contractor, the owner knew that a two-pile elevator boat lift was the ideal solution. The contractor and owner then brought Shore Design in for professional design/permitting services. After DEEP and Army Corps boat lift permits were issued, the owner gave the contractor permission to install the lift. The project was completed in 2023.
An existing dock in eastern CT was severely damaged beyond repair and needed to be replaced. The owner knew that, before construction could begin, a DEEP dock permit and Army Corps dock permit were required, so he hired a marine contractor for construction and Shore Design for professional design/permitting services. Once permits were issued, the owner gave the contractor approval to start work—construction was completed in 2023. To successfully closeout the project, the owner hired Shore Design to perform the required post-construction compliance certification.
An old seawall (aka bulkhead) on a tidal river in eastern CT reached its useful life and started to fail. It was important to the property owner that the replacement solution be resilient, durable, low maintenance, and aesthetically pleasing. To meet these goals, the owner selected a vinyl sheet pile bulkhead with a concrete cap. Shore Design was hired to develop the design (structural engineering by Sound Engineering Associates) and obtain coastal permits from local, state, and federal agencies. After permits were issued, the owner promptly hired a contractor, who completed construction in early 2024.
A property owner on the Thames River wanted to restore and stabilize the waterfront. Knowing that the river is a highly regulated waterway, the owner brought Shore Design in to evaluate the property, develop a restoration plan, and coordinate with DEEP. Once the plan was approved by DEEP, the owner and Shore Design worked as a team to implement project—the owner supplied labor and equipment and Shore Design ordered the plants and provided technical guidance. The planting was completed in 2023 and will be monitored for several years.
A seawall (aka bulkhead) in eastern CT was damaged during the pre-Thanksgiving 2023 storm. The owner immediately hired a contractor, who in turn hired Shore Design for professional design/permitting services. Working as a team, the property was temporarily stabilized while fast-track reconstruction permit applications were filed with DEEP and the Army Corps. After permits were issued, the owner had the contractor begin work immediately. Construction was completed in early 2024.
A property owner on the Connecticut River wanted to add a dock to the waterfront for recreational boating purposes. The owner's marine contractor brought Shore Design in to prepare a dock design and obtain a DEEP dock permit and an Army Corps dock permit. To protect the structure and boats from the sometimes harsh river conditions, the design included a fixed dock, boat lift, and jet ski / wave runner lift. Construction started in 2023.
A steel sheet pile seawall (aka bulkhead) on the Connecticut River showed signs of deterioration and the owner wanted to take proactive steps to repair it. It was important to the owner to select a long-term solution. Knowing that construction would be challenging in a highly regulated waterway, the owner first selected an experienced marine contractor and then hired Shore Design for professional design/permitting services. Working as a team, the owner, contractor, and Shore Design developed a design that met the project goals and satisfied regulatory requirements. After obtaining coastal permits from the DEEP and USACE , the owner began coordinating with the contractor to begin work. Construction is planned for late 2024.

The owner then brought Shore Design in for professional design/permitting services. After DEEP and Army Corps permits were issued, the owner gave the contractor permission to conduct the modification work. The project was completed in 2024. To successfully closeout the project, the owner then hired Shore Design to perform the required post-construction compliance certification.
